Things I do….

Sinead doyle tutor

One of my previous roles was as Director of Courses at the National Tailoring Academy in Dublin when it first started. Then the Academy specialised in professional development courses aimed at industry professionals and college graduates. I was part of the team who developed the CPD Diploma in Bespoke Fashion Tailoring, accredited by the Dublin Institute of Technology and managed this course until June 2015, along with over 15 others available at the Academy. I also taught on some courses including corset making and menswear pattern cutting

Through this I also ran a module for, and lecture on, DIT’s postgraduate Diploma in Fashion Buying and Management, which is one of the things that led me to moving into a career in fashion buying where I currently work

My first lecturing experience was as a tutor and lecturer on Limpert’s Academy of Design’s Image and Fashion Styling course and I’ve lectured in fashion history for Re-Dress.

Designing is fun but brining those designs to life is even better.

I worked for a time in Atelier Nicolao, a couture and costume house in Venice where I began to learn the secrets of corset making. I’ve continued to study the topic and even teach in it now.

My masters degree in menswear from London College of Fashion gave me a passion for tailoring and fit and put me on a path eventually leading to the National Tailoring Academy.

I’ve always cut and graded my own patterns for my own womenswear label and the technical side has always been important to me.

I ran my own contemporary womenswear fashion label for six years, selling successfully in the UK and Ireland. This was was manufactured both locally and in Italy.

My role in this was womenswear design, including technical packs, fabric sourcing and research and development.

I also took on design jobs for other companies including pattern cutting, tech pack creation, print CAD and QC for a menswear sports fashion brand and design, management and execution of uniforms for Plassey House Staff at the University of Limerick

I’ve also worked in childrenswear design, young womenswear design and my masters degree was in menswear design. I pretty much like designing everything.

There’s an old joke,
Q: How do you know if someone you’ve just met has run a marathon?
A: They’ve already told you.

I run a lot and do the Dublin marathon each year. The running is my way to relax and the marathon training means there are six months every year when I can eat whatever I want!

Sinead Doyle retail experience

I’ve worked in retail management for a design collective which I was also a part of. I’ve had my own online store and ran a stall at the Loft Market for three years. But when not selling my own clothing there are a few other places I’ve worked for in retail over the last 16 years.

Harrods (Mens Ready to Wear – Tailoring)

Selfridges (Tiso outdoor sportswear concession)

Agent Provocateur

Bill Amberg

Brown Thomas

CAD wasn’t really a thing when I was in college so I did a course in Lectra when I finished my MA.

I also bought a copy of Excel for Dummies and Adobe Illustrator Classroom in a book, so ten years on I’m pretty good at these things.

I’m proficient at all Microsoft Office programmes, mac office programmes, Adobe Creative suite and I’ve created this site, my previous design business and retail sites and the current National Tailoring Academy website on wordpress.

I’ve also created all the current marketing materials, event invites, brochures etc… for the National Tailoring Academy on a nice shiny Mac in my office.

I’m currently learning basic analytical programming using R with MIT x The Analytics Edge course online. If this seems strange for a fashion person, check out EDITD’s fashion trend forecasting using retail and show data. It’s very addictive.

Sinead likes to bake

I put this here because if you know me or work with me, there’s no doubt you’ll have to pretend to like my baking or cooking attempts at some stage.

This was my first attempt at Donal Skehan’s Swedish Chocolate Dream Cake (
Possibly the best chocolate cake you’ll ever taste. My icing skills have improved immensely since then…

I was delighted to have one of my S/S 11 pieces chosen for Sonia Lennon and Christian Ammann’s fashion film DAIS II

The dress is woven and hand stitched strips of silk chiffon with floral appliqué hand cut from liberty print silk crepe.

Alongside desiger Helen Cody I’ve judged the student awards at the Kenmare Lace Festival for both their first inaugural event in 2013 and the second event in 2015. It’s a fantastic event and a beautiful part of Ireland.

In 2012 I tendered for, designed, cut and organised the manufacture of the ladies uniforms for the Plassey House staff at the University of Limerick.

I judged Cork Fashion Week’s Young Designer of the Year in 2012 where my designs were also featured on the catwalk and on Exposé. I returned to the event again in 2014

In 2012/13 I worked with the team at Traxedo to help improve the patterns, cut, specs, fabric and detailing on their fun tuxedo inspired tracksuits. I also worked on measurements and QC on the garments return.

There are some things I’m considering blogging about, mainly to do with various social, analytical and historical fashion research I do in my spare time. But I won’t rush into it because this page is new and what fascinates me will probably bore the heck out of everyone else until I take the time to write it down properly. So stay tuned.
